Rev. Stephen Oliver is Trinity’s guest proclaimer for Mission Sunday 2019. Pastor Oliver serves the Lord through The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) in the Asia region, based in Taiwan. As a theological educator, Stephen teaches the News Testament at China Lutheran Seminary in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
In his message, Pastor Oliver discusses Jesus’ compassion for us. He mentions not only the blessing we have of salvation through faith but also the blessing we have to witness and serve, becoming an example for those also seeking to be saved. With the Holy Spirit as our guide, we can bring a positive attitude to bear to tell of God’s grace, which helps influence and bring others to Christ.
Pastor Oliver also discusses each person as being the object of a spiritual battleground between God and the devil – where God seeks to draw us to Him with His Grace and Love, and Satan attempts to separate us from God through deception.
Pastor Oliver provides insight into the mission field in China, particularly how we are now in the fourth cycle of mission work there, each previous time the movement stifled by dynastic authoritarianism. At this point, in spite of an attempt to suppress Christianity 40 years ago, China now numbers 100 million and more believers through the work of the Holy Spirit and those Christians who spread the gospel there.
